2020 has been an incredibly challenging year for many of us, not least for small business owners and non-profit leaders who are trying to survive during the pandemic and continue to serve our community.

With the holiday season upon us, a time of gift-giving and end-of-year donations, we wanted to highlight some of the local organizations and businesses that we are especially thankful for this year.

For Small Business Saturday, Giving Tuesday and as you consider end of year giving and purchasing gifts for friends and family, here are some amazing companies and non-profits that you can support.

OPEN DOOR LEGAL

Open Door Legal is pioneering the country's first system of universal access to the law. You know how you get "the right to an attorney, if you cannot afford one" when you're in a criminal case? Well, not so much for civil law. That means you could need to leave an abusive relationship, get a green card, or try to fend off an illegal eviction--all with no legal help at all. In fact, 80% of people with a civil legal issue never get help for it. Open Door Legal is trying to change that. Join them in creating a turning point in 2020 for those who need it most--because the law should belong to all of us. Learn more and donate today.

MIRACLE MESSAGES

Miracle Messages is an award-winning nonprofit organization that rebuilds social support systems for our unhoused neighbors. Their visionary reunion service helps people on the streets record short messages to loved ones, and then their dedicated team of volunteer “digital detectives” locates these loved ones and delivers the messages. To date, they have reunited over 375 families, with an average time separated of 15 years. Now, faced with the pandemic, they are pioneering new social support systems for people isolated by homelessness. Learn more, volunteer or donate today.

CUESA

This holiday season, give the gift of good food while supporting local farmers and food crafters. At CUESA’s farmers markets, you’ll find fresh, local ingredients for your winter feasts, as well as gifts that nourish the body, the earth, and our local community. As the days turn cold and rainy, farmers market vendors count on loyal customers like you to help sustain their businesses year-round. Dandelion Chocolate

Dandelion Chocolate, one of our Ferry Building neighbors, is a bean-to-bar chocolate maker, perfect for anyone with a sweet tooth this holiday season. For over 10 years, they’ve been turning cocoa beans and organic sugar into single-origin dark chocolate with a sustainable and ethical approach. They travel and build lasting relationships with cocoa farmers and producers, then craft small batches of chocolate back home in their San Francisco factory. Check out Dandelion Chocolate for your gift-giving needs!

Book Passage

Book Passage is a San Francisco institution that has served the community for more than 40 years, as a bookstore and host to many author events over the years. We've been delighted to partner with Book Passage on our SHACK15 Conversations series, bringing to you some of the most engaging and thought-provoking authors of today. Choose Book Passage for your book-buying needs this holiday season and support their annual Giving Tree program, which donates over 1,000 books to children in need in the Bay Area.
